The Savannah Riverkeeper is pleased to report a victory with its long-standing public opposition of Olin Corporation’s excessive mercury deposition into the Savannah River. In December 2010, Olin Corporation announced it would cease chlorine production at its Augusta, GA plant after 2012.
This comes after a lengthy, eight-year campaign in which SRK collected over 3,500 petition signatures, distributed collateral, and continually defined the issues to media outlets. Although the long-standing issue is nearly resolved, SRK is concerned about the high amount of mercury left in the old ponds surrounding the property- and our primary concern is the portion of the plant along the Savannah River.
SRK will continue to pressure Olin Corporation to ensure the mercury laden soil along its banks does not erode into the river.
